In political terminology, an "October Surprise" is a news event deliberately timed to shape the outcome of an election. This October, singer/songwriter, trumpeter, and multi-instrumentalist Kate Fitz reclaims the phrase, delivering a 7 track EP that serves as a musical rallying cry for solidarity and resilience against fascism.
October Surprise combines raw, kinetic energy with uncompromising lyricism. Featuring both heartfelt vocal melodies and hard hitting grooves, the EP explores the emotional and collective weight of standing up against oppressive systems. October Surprise is an invitation to find strength in community, transform frustration into action, and refuse to sit quietly on the sidelines.
Kate Fitz is a Utah Valley based vocalist, trumpet player, pianist, and songwriter known for her rich blend of soul, pop, R&B, jazz, and sometimes rock. From commanding brass lines to effortlessly expressive vocals, Fitz brings a distinct sonic depth and live energy to every project she touches.
Whether playing local stages, collaborating on studio records, or crafting immersive original projects, her music is driven by sharp storytelling, complex harmony, and a passion for human connection. Her upcoming 7 song EP, October Surprise (releasing October 17th, 2026), marks her most direct statement yet: an aim to confront sociopolitical tension with defiance, solidarity, and hope.
No Humanity
Driven by high energy Queen inspired rock arrangements, "No Humanity" uses sharp satire to expose the quiet absurdity of cynical apathy. Kate challenges the self serving lie that it is better to stop caring than to risk the pain of witnessing others suffer.
Darling Tangerine
Framed as a bittersweet, soft piano ballad to a scorned lover, "Darling Tangerine" delivers a satirical letter to former leadership, turning political betrayal into a poignant, heartbreaking acoustic reckoning
It Doesn't Hurt
This vulnerable, stripped back piano performance captures the quiet desperation of self deception in times of political upheaval, culminating in the lingering realization that denial only buries the flame.
Neighbor
With urgent, driving piano lines and commanding vocal presence, "Neighbor" delivers a potent critique of institutionalized cruelty, referencing real world tragedies and the quiet horror of turning a blind eye to one’s community.
Solemn Plea
For those who enjoy jazz infused piano ballads and subtle holiday motifs, "Solemn Plea" voices a humble plea for empathy and liberation, asking for protection over children in conflict zones from the perspective of someone who doesn't want to pray.
The Choice
Featuring percussive marching, a heavenly chorus, and raw protest vocals, "The Choice" serves as a powerful anthem of conscience. The song revolves around familial divides, state violence, hypocrisy and religion, and the ultimate cost of surrendering empathy.
Rise
Blending complex jazz harmonies, dynamic modulations, and powerful vocals, "Rise" navigates the heavy reality of displacement and state power before transforming into a defiant, collective call for action and reclamation.
